Staff training and workshops

Upskilling staff to help  others

Most people who need mental health support do not get to see a therapist and when they do it is a reactive intervention. Whether they do or don't they will often be in contact with other practitioners who support them in some way. We've spent the last 10 years providing psychologically informed training, coaching, consulation to practitioners such as GPs, family and housing/hostel support workers, probation officers, social workers, substance misuse workers and corporate managers. The focus has been to understand and work more effectively with people with a variety of mental health conditions . Topics include:

  • Mental health awareness

  • Motivational interviewing

  • Stress, anxiety and depression

  • Personality disorder

  • Shaping behaviour

  • Looking after yourself - staying well

  • Mental health in the workplace

  • Self-harm and suicidality

  • Loneliness

Coaching and consultation

Empowering practitioners and services to be more effective

Over 12 years of experience providing empowering specialist consultation and coaching to individual practitioners and teams to work more effectively with the people they see. By adopting a combination of therapeutic skills, the process consultation model and collaborative problem solving, we help staff get better outcomes and feel more informed, in control, confident and empowered in what they do.  Practitioners also often find a new sense of purpose in what they do at work

We also consulted to non-clinical support functions - e.g., IT, information governance) to ensure projects and services work effectively and deliver a better experience

Mental health innovation

Always looking to find better ways to help others

We have an instinct to find better solutions to today's problems. Here are a few examples:

  • Led the design of the local NHS Trust implementation of the NHS community transformation framework, ensuring alignment to the national framework and leading numerous staff and user workshops

  • Design of 3-year roll out of community mental health transformation across 20 Primary Care Networks

  • Re-alignment of community mental health teams and caseloads to Primary Care Networks, and devised the protocol for the caseload transfer plan

  • Advice and support to charity that successfully transitioned frontline working staff to a co-location consultation model

  • Delivery of a bespoke Motivational Interviewing training for hundreds of social care practitioners across a large adult social care system

  • Psychologically informed consultation and training service with a probation team that managed high risk offenders. The staff facing intervention led to a 50% reduction in prison recalls with no serious incidents or offending. This formed the pilot of the joint NHS/NOMS community offender personality Translating psychologically informed consultation and training service to primary care, children's social care, family support services, housing services, urgent care and a serious gangs and youth violence service.

  • Design of a secure online portal to manage referrals to multiple care pathways for children and young people's mental and physical health.

  • Design, mobilisation and development of clinical single point of access (referral management) centres for a CAMHS (Child & Adolescent Mental Health Service) and paediatric health system of care. This included  stakeholder management to ensure the single point of access was integrated within a system of care, and mapped the eligibilty criteria for services across the region.

  • Design, mobilisation and delivery of an onsite workplace wellbeing service in a specialist bank in the City of London.

  • Collaboration with NHS and private sector bid teams to articulate new clinical models/services and their benefits over the standard approach.

Clinical leadership

Bringing people along with vision, credibility, trust, direction and solutions

People turn to our people to lead because of our natural instinct to improve services and the experience of practitioners and 'customers', combined with our ability to articulate a clear vision and the solution. We have the ability to lead and provide clarity and be the do-er to get the best outcome.

"Managers are people who do things right and leaders are people who do the right thing. Both roles are crucial, and they differ profoundly."

Warren Bennis

Pathway optimisation

Improving service delivery, clinical quality, governance and ways of working

We taken on projects to improve how clinical services are delivered from the perspective of the 'customer' and the provider. Our work has led to improvements in:

  • Processes and workflows

  • Service efficiency - by defining key metrics and monitoring processes, and the use of technology and analytics to support service delivery

  • 'Customer' experience - improving access and convenience for customers whilst minimising unnecessary effort for staff teams

  • Clinical decision making - by reducing unnecessary variation between and within care pathways

  • Clinical supervision structures and governance - to improve quality and assurance

  • Competency frameworks for staff teams - to ensure the right staff are undertaking the right tasks within a clinical workflow

  • Business insights - through mapping data items, data models, reporting and then clinical stories.
